A Message from the President
Throughout 2016, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana (BCBSMT) will be constantly peering back and looking forward as we celebrate a significant milestone—turning 75.
On September 9, 1940, the Hospital Service Association (Blue Cross) entered Montana. Six years later, in 1946, the Montana Physicians’ Service (Blue Shield) entered the marketplace with the same purpose: to help Montanans gain access to quality medical care at an affordable cost. The two “Blues” operated independently until 1986, when they merged to form Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana, thus paving the way for the BCBSMT we know and love today.
Our company has morphed over three quarters of a century, and in August of 2013, we became a local division of Health Care Service Corporation—bringing the strength, stability and resources to continue for at least another 75 years.
It’s been fun to look back at old pictures and rekindle some of our many achievements along the way. The running shorts were shorter and the tube socks and sideburns were longer in that first Governor’s Cup race back in 1973. In 1981, we ushered in our first computer system after hand-processing claims for four decades. In 2013, we successfully launched all-new products in the first-ever Affordable Care Act open enrollment period.
What an exciting history it has been. At the root of it all is our unwavering commitment to the member-owned health care model and delivering superior products and services to our members.
I could not be more proud of our longstanding heritage and of the many employees we’ve been fortunate to call our “family” over the years. Our employees truly are our biggest asset. Their actions every day define who we are and what we stand for as a company.
It’s clear that the only constant these days is change in our transformative industry. Yet I’m convinced that our promise to fulfill our purpose is what will continue to differentiate us and what will ultimately carry us well into the future.
While our longevity is front and center on our minds, there is much to celebrate about 2015. The stories contained within our 2015 Social Responsibility Report will show, rather than just tell, the substantial impact that BCBSMT has at the local level all across Montana.
The future holds much in store, but the most exciting aspect is the opportunity to continue building partnerships and enhancing the communities we call home. After all, working on behalf of others is the most rewarding thing I can think of, and I look forward to the privilege of continuing to serve Montanans.
Mike Frank, President
